Hólaskjól

Hólaskjól is nestled in Lambaskarðshólar, beside an ancient lava field formed during the Eldgjá eruption between the years 934 and 940. This peaceful and scenic spot is just a 5-minute walk from a hidden gem—a beautiful, unnamed waterfall in Syðri-Ófæra river. Though often referred to as Silfurfoss or Litli-Gullfoss, we prefer the name Huldufoss. Thanks to the surrounding lava field, Hólaskjól is well sheltered from the wind, making it a calm and pleasant place to stay. The area also offers numerous hiking trails, perfect for exploring the stunning natural landscape.

Nearby sights and huts

A 6–7 km hike from Hólaskjól leads to Álftavötn, a scenic area where streams burst from lava fields into crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush vegetation. A natural stone bridge crosses the Syðri-Ófæra river, near a historic hiking lodge restored by the touring group Útivist.

Nearby lies Eldgjá, a dramatic volcanic canyon. From its parking lot, a popular 2 km trail leads to the beautiful Ófærufoss waterfall. Adventurous hikers can continue 7 km up to Gjátindur, a 943-meter peak offering breathtaking views.

Southwest of Eldgjá, trails pass through exotic landscapes and the Mórauðuvatnshnjúkar peaks, following the Strangakvísl river before reaching Álftavötn and looping back to Hólaskjól (9–10 km plus 6–7 km return).

Another stunning route starts at Langisjór, climbs Sveinstindur for panoramic views, then follows the Skaftá river past mossy valleys and lava formations to Skælingar and Stóragil. The journey continues to Gjátindur, Ófærufoss, and finally back to Hólaskjól—about 36–40 km in total, with huts along the way bookable here on this website.

Lastly, Strútsstígur begins at Hólaskjól and winds through Álftavötn, Ófærudalur, and Svarthnúksfjöll to the geothermal Strútslaug, ending at the Strútsskáli lodge (27 km).

Skælingar: Hiking 20 km, technical difficulty moderate.
Álftavötn: Hiking 7 km, technical difficulty moderate.
